Syd González is an academic, author, and fandom enthusiast. They are a cultural anthropologist that emphasizes auto-ethnography and community-engaged methodologies. Their academic work engages with decoloniality, queer theory, and joy. They’re also a passionate Houstonian, dubbing their dissertation a “love letter to Texas.”
González is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Anthropology at Northwestern University. Their dissertation focuses on material embodiments of masculinity as productions of joy across Latine communities in Houston, specifically Aztec danzantes (Itzcoatl Tezkatlipoka) and drag kings. As a marginalized scholar, they are dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion within higher education having spent two years as a Graduate Assistant with Multicultural Student Affairs supporting Native American and Indigenous students.
Academically, Syd aspires to continue teaching and uplifting marginalized voices.
Creatively, Syd aims to create romance novels centering Latine queerness and joy.
Syd is the co-host of The Fanthropologists, a podcast dedicated to combining anthropological concepts and internet fandoms, with friend and colleague Bridgette Hulse.
